3-5mm Sodium Thiosulfate Pentahydrate dissolves in water and turpentine, but is hardly soluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution exhibits a weakly alkaline reaction. It decomposes and precipitates sulfur and carbon dioxide when exposed to strong acids. It has a reducing effect. It is used as a photographic fixing agent, dechlorinating agent, and analytical reagent, and is also used in chrome tanning of leather, extraction of silver from ores, etc. It also has anti-allergic effects. Clinically, it is used for the treatment of skin itching, chronic urticaria, drug eruptions, and poisoning by cyanide and arsenic agents.
